1954 Bowman Gum : Power for Peace
Bowman's Power for Peace trading cards were released in 1954 by
Bowman Gum and Haelan Laboratories, Inc.
The 96-card series features recolored U.S. military photographs of early Cold
War era aircraft, ships, and weapons.
The American Card Catalog reference is R701-10. The
Power for Peace card series is included in
The Jefferson R. Burdick Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of
Art.
The cards are copyrighted "B. G. H. L. I." Each card measures 2.5 x 3.75 inches (6.3 x 9.5 cm), slightly taller than a modern trading card. One-card packs retailed for a penny and five-card packs were five cents. Each pack includes a piece of bubble gum. The series was also distributed in 15-card cellophane packs that include cards from the Television and Radio Stars of NBC series . Each repack box contains 36 cello packs.
The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory sounding rocket Viking #4 is pictured on card #73. Viking #4 is the first object launched into space from a ship. The Martin RTV-N-12 rocket was fired from the deck of the USS Norton Sound (AV-111) near Jarvis Island in the South Pacific Ocean on May 12, 1950 . The card text incorrectly lists the date as April 1950. Viking #4 reached an apogee of 106.8 miles (172 km).

"Viking Number Four"
A photograph of Viking #7 is featured on card #74. The Martin RTV-N-12 rocket was launched into sub-orbital space from White Sands LC33 on August 7, 1951. The rocket reached an apogee of 136 miles (219 km) , breaking the single-stage altitude record set by an American V-2. The card text incorrectly labels the test as "VIKING-9".
