1951 British Educational Series : Modern Aircraft
The British Educational Series Modern Aircraft cards
were distributed by various companies in England. The collection was
later retitled Wonders of Modern Transport. Brands observed
include BeanO Ltd., Sweetule Junior Service, and Osborne Tobacco Co. The
50-card series features photographs of post-World War II aircraft and weapons developed by Britain and the United States. Each card measures approximately 1.45 x 2.68 inches (37 x 68 mm).
"The U.S. Navy's Martin Viking"
The collection includes Viking #7, a U.S. Navy sounding
rocket. The Martin RTV-N-12 rocket was
launched into sub-orbital space from White Sands LC33 on August 7, 1951. Viking #7 reached an apogee of 136 miles (219 km) , breaking the single-stage
altitude record set by an American V-2. The payload contained an
experiment package to measure cosmic radiation.
